I woke up with limited mobility, having done something to throw out my back. My primary care doctor couldn’t see me until the afternoon and Amanda and the staff at AFC got me in right away. Everyone is friendly and helpful. I was already feeling a little better by the afternoon which would’ve been the earliest I could’ve been seen by my regular physician. Thank you!

Pennsylvania Strep Tests

Strep tests are frequently used to determine if you have group A or group B strep. Group A strep is a bacteria that causes strep throat, which is a sore throat illness. The bacteria Group B strep is found in the vaginal area, as well as the digestive and urinary tracts, but it rarely produces symptoms.

If you have signs of strep throat, such as a painful throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and enlarged lymph nodes, your doctor may request a strep A test. A rapid strep test or a regular strep test can both be used to identify Strep A, and both are done in the same way.

You will be asked to tilt your head back and open your mouth wide during a strep A test. The healthcare professional will use a tongue depressor to gently keep your tongue down while taking a tissue sample from the back of your throat with a lengthy swab. The strep A test is quick and painless, but it may cause some discomfort. The fast strep test yields results in minutes, while the normal test takes one to two days.

Only women who are 36 to 37 weeks pregnant are routinely tested for strep B. Group B strep can be transferred to a baby when it travels through the birth canal since it lives in the vaginal and rectum. The strep B test can be done with a swab or a urine sample.

You or your doctor will use a cotton swab to gather tissue and fluid samples from your vaginal and rectum during a strep B swab test. Your doctor will ask you to urinate into a sterile cup for a strep B urine test. Your sample will then be sent to a laboratory for additional investigation, with findings arriving in one to two days.

If your strep test is positive, your doctor will work with you to determine the best course of action. Antibiotics are commonly used to treat strep A and strep B infections. Antibiotics are routinely given through an IV line to a mother with strep B during delivery to prevent the infection from spreading to her baby.

Strep Test FAQs

  • How long does a strep test take?

A strep test typically takes only a few minutes. The strep A test is performed with a throat swab, while the strep B test is performed with a cotton swab or a urine sample. Depending on the procedure utilized, your healthcare professional can tell you how long your strep test will take.

  • What happens if you test positive for group B strep?

Adults rarely have signs or sickness from Group B strep, but it can be harmful for newborn babies. Antibiotics are routinely administered to women who test positive for group B strep during pregnancy to prevent the infection from being transmitted to the baby as it travels through the birth canal. Antibiotics are not required for women with group B strep who are having a scheduled Cesarean section since the baby will not be exposed to the germs in the birth canal.

  • How much does a strep test cost in Pennsylvania?

The cost of a strep test is determined by a number of factors, including provider rates, the type of test (throat swab, vaginal swab, or urinalysis), geographic region, and whether or not your health plan covers this treatment. The easiest method to find out how much a strep test will cost is to get an estimate from your health insurance company or the step test company.

  • Does insurance cover strep testing in Pennsylvania?

Most health insurance plans will pay the cost of strep testing, especially if your doctor believes the test is medically required based on your symptoms and current health situation. To discover more about your coverage and benefits, contact your insurance carrier directly, or ask your strep testing provider if they can run a complimentary insurance benefits check on your behalf.

  • How do they test for strep throat in Pennsylvania?

The strep A test can be used to diagnose strep throat. Your healthcare provider will first ask you to lean back in your chair and open your mouth wide. Then they'll take a tissue sample from the back of your throat with a long cotton swab. The quick strep A test and the normal strep A test both use this testing procedure.

  • How long does it take to get strep test results in Pennsylvania?

The quick test for strep A offers results in 10 to 20 minutes, whereas the usual test for strep A takes 24 to 48 hours. The results of a strep B test are usually available within 24 to 48 hours. You can get a better indication of when you should expect your findings from your doctor or the strep test provider.

  • What is a rapid strep test?

Only group A strep can be diagnosed with a fast strep test. Antigens are substances that cause an immunological response, and this test looks for them. A rapid strep test gives you results in minutes rather than days, and it's done the same manner as a regular strep test. Using a throat swab as a test.

  • How accurate is the rapid strep test?

A reliable result can be obtained using a quick strep test. If the fast test results are negative and the patient is suffering many symptoms of strep throat, some clinicians may order a traditional strep A test. A normal throat culture test for strep A is more accurate than a quick test for strep A, but it takes longer to get the results.

  • Where should I get a strep test in Pennsylvania?

Many healthcare practitioners, including your primary care physician and urgent care clinics, can administer strep testing. If you're pregnant, a specialist like a midwife or an OB-GYN may do the strep B test for you or send you to a lab that does. You can also use Solv to identify a lab in your neighborhood that offers high-quality strep tests and schedule a same-day appointment.
